- Seth Shiv Narain Birla lays the foundation of the Group
1939
- Orient Paper is founded with a single paper machine at Brajrajnagar, Odisha
1946
- NEI (formerly National Bearing Co.) is established as a pioneer in bearings
1947
- Neosym (formerly Indian Smelting & Refining Co) is acquired
1952
- Rukmani Birla establishes The Modern High School for Girls, Kolkata
1954
- Orient Fans (formerly Calcutta Electrical Manufacturing Company) is acquired
1955
- BM Birla establishes BIT (Birla Institute of Technology), Mesra
1956
- HIL (formerly Hyderabad Industries), a single fibre cement sheet plant is acquired
1964
- BM Birla establishes the Birla Institute of Scientific Research (BISR)
1965
- Orient Paper commences production at Amlai, Madhya Pradesh
1966
- GMMCO (formerly Blackwood Hodge Equipment) is acquired
1969
- BM Birla establishes The Calcutta Medical Research Institute
1982
- Orient Cement is founded
1985
- BM Birla Science Centre, Hyderabad is established
1986
- 1986 BIT becomes one of the first forty deemed universities in India
1989
- BM Birla Heart Research Centre, a super specialty hospital is established

- Birlasoft, an IT services provider is founded

- Nirmala Birla establishes the Rukmani Birla Modern High School, Jaipur
